Today marks the day of the latest Apple WWDC event, where they showcase a bunch of products and services, but we’re a long way from the original live keynote style events from Steve Jobs. What was originally designed to be a conference for developers became an advertising platform for “What’s new at Apple”.
Note: This post was written before WWDC 2026 / Announcements were released. It may age poorly.
Today, lots of people will be anticipating what’s next and lining up their hard earned cash to drop on the latest and greatest tech.
Meanwhile, lots of people already know what’s coming up as rumours pull in interested eyeballs.
I used to be one of those people.
Then I got older.
Not in a “I hate new things now” way, I still like tech, I’ll occasionally watch announcements like this, in the case of this company, I have most of the ecosystem in some capacity, but the dopamine hit I used to look for when the cool new thing came out isn’t once what it was.
The phone in my pocket still works. The laptop on my desk still works. The tablet I convinced myself was essential is still mostly used for browsing, YouTube, and browsing apps now and again, before it feeds my dislike towards subscriptions. All of this tech is more important to me that it keeps on working than a flashy new feature.
Also, with AI being the center of attention right now, I can pretty much guarantee that it’s going to be heavily featured at the event, without looking at any rumours.
And this is where modern tech announcements don’t have the grip they once had, because more often than not, they don’t address real issues people have, or are so incremental that it’s almost pointless to announce (eg: 8 new emoji?).
I’ll continue to watch and hope for the “one more thing” that makes me change my thinking, but currently, there isn’t much that’s winning me over, and I’ll carry on with my current tech until it breaks and is unrecoverable.
Update: Well, it looks like WWDC was 90% AI improvements, and is currently delayed in Europe due to DMA. I guess, for now, there’s nothing to see here for EU folks, and this could possibly be the most disappointing WWDC I’ve seen. Oh dear!
