Hello, Question: What Vintage Tech Hill Are You Willing to Die On?

Filed In: , ,

I’ll jump straight into my answer with this one, RSS.

RSS allows you to follow feeds of what you love to put into a format that suits you.

You choose the reader, the layout, the order.

It predates following publishers on social networks, which can stuff extra fluff (ads, huge headers, weird template designs) around what you want to follow, instead keeping it simple providing the core text and images of posts. You can even use it with YouTube Subscriptions.

Annoyingly, loads of websites have quietly removed their RSS icons now and in some cases Web Browsers don’t know what to do with the feed.

Some publishers would rather push you towards newsletters, apps, paywalls, or social media follows. Others still have RSS feeds, but good luck finding them unless you already know where to look!

Which is a shame, because RSS is still brilliant.

In protest, I will keep an RSS icon at the bottom of this website for as long as I can!

… with that said, what’s yours?

  • Physical media?
  • Games that work straight from the disc?
  • Games that don’t need the internet?
  • Games that you can complete without cash?
  • Forums?
  • iPods?
  • MiniDisc?
  • Proper headphone jacks?
  • Winamp skins?
  • The Start menu being on the left?

What “vintage” tech will you never give up?
