The Hunt for Weird Little Websites

One of my early work videos on YouTube involved collecting a bunch of weird websites that people had made and cataloging them.

While monolithic websites like Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook and others consume the majority of the web, and of course AI chatbots avoiding the need to go on websites at all, there’s a growing void of websites made by individuals just… because they can.

One website I’ve come to appreciate is called NeoCities, which is a throwback to the GeoCities of the old web, offering a platform for people to create their own websites. I particularly love the start of their mission statement:

“To make the web fun again”

I think that’s partly why I’ve enjoyed putting this site together again. It’s just me, with a little spare time, typing out what I’m thinking about, no real agenda, not pretending to be something it’s not, so I have a strong appreciation for people making things and just putting them out there.

I’ll continue to hunt out those little weird websites, and share them where I can. Let’s start with this one:

https://floor796.com – A huge animated scene with various characters and objects in various rooms, the idea of it being Floor 796 on a space station.

Do you have any weird websites you’ve come across?

What do you think?
